Turned down at age 15 by the staff of the Albania national team, Armando Broja never gave up. “I wanted to prove them wrong,” says the Slough-born forward who returned two years later and impressed in a trial for the Under-19s. Since then, his ascent has been unstoppable. Scoring on debuts for the Under-19s and Under-21s, Broja soon became a fan favourite for the senior team as well, although managerial decisions and injuries halted his contribution in the last few years. Having started as a youngster on Tottenham’s books, he was brought through by Chelsea and has had successful loan spells at Vitesse, Southampton and latterly Fulham. His father always wanted him to become like the first famous Ronaldo and Broja studied him to try to emulate what the Brazilian did in his prime. “I want to be Albania’s own Harry Kane, Ronaldo or R9,” the forward said. “I want to get my country to a World Cup. And when my career is over, I want my name to live on. For Albania. For my dad.”
