Mason Mount is being extensively linked with a move to Liverpool. The England international's contract with Chelsea expires in 2024 and the negotiations over a new one have reached a dead end.
Mount is one of the most exciting talents in the country, he's versatile and has experience playing at the highest level. Signing him would be a coup for Liverpool — and here is how the Reds could use him.
Midfielder in 4-3-3
Liverpool normally use the 4-3-3 formation but the midfield needs a revamp. Mount has previously played in central midfield and he could be used there at Anfield.
Winger in 4-3-3
Mount's versatility means he can play literally everywhere in attack. At Chelsea, he's been used as both left and right forward. Given the abundance of left wingers in Liverpool's squad, here's how the Reds could line up with Mount on the right (with Salah unavailable, rested or out of form).
This is not his best position though. Mount is primarily an attacking midfielder that dictates tempo by moving the ball forward with his passes or carries.
He also scores and assists a lot (13+16 G/A last season) but he does so when played centrally. He is also right-footed so pushing him far right would limit him in terms of shooting.
Ideally, if he is to play as a right winger then it’s only as a cover.
Attacking midfielder / False 9 in 4-2-4
Jurgen Klopp has occasionally switched to the 4-2-4 formation, for example against Madrid away. It's a more attacking approach in which one of centre-forwards plays in a Firmino role, dropping deep and linking up midfield and attack.
With Bobby leaving in the summer, Mount could replace him in this position.
