'They are really strong': Charlton boss shares his impressions after Arsenal friendly
"It was a good workout. Obviously playing Arsenal, they are a proper side. It was a difficult workout and it was good fitness," Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer told the Addicks' official side after getting hammered 6-0 by the Gunners in a pre-restart friendly at the Emirates.
"Of course we were rusty, we were always going to be that but the lads worked hard and put all their effort in and we looked quite good fitness wise. It was a good test for us.
“To be playing against those players. Some of them who have been playing Champions League for years, playing against a proper opposition, every single position they are really strong.
"Our players didn’t disgrace themselves, they worked hard and tried to do the right things, it will be good for them, a good learning curve.”
"Arsenal are a week in front of us training wise."
Mikel Arteta used two different XIs in each half, testing two midfield formations and, surprisingly, benching Cedric Soares.
A pleasant surprise was Ainsley Maitland-Niles getting his chance and he took it firmly, providing an assist.
