Costly Moment of Madness in Madrid
It is said that when one forgets his history he is bound to repeat the mistakes of the past.
One hopes that the 'moment of madness' that led to the sudden and painful departure of Cristiano Ronaldo from Madrid will not be repeated again.
Speaking to the press after winning the treble in Kiev in 2018, Cristiano caused quite a stir by indicating his intention to leave the club. Even Sergio Ramos' interference couldn't help the matter or quell the tension and panic generated by Ronaldo's outburst that was in some way caused by the refusal of the club to approve a pay rise for him. It was indeed an anticlimax to a joyous and ecstatic moment of winning the Champions League for the record third time in a row. The import of the strange and unexpected outburst by Cristiano on such a joyous occasion was not lost on ardent Madrid fans who have been following the matter for an increment in his pay vis-a-vis his yeoman's job for the club.
At our rival club, Barcelona, a similar gesture had been made to his eternal rival, Messi, even though Cristiano arguably delivered better than the Argentine during that particular period of time.
With the hindsight, one could see that Cristiano's demand wasn't too outrageous or out of place considering the consequences of the grievous decision not to accede to his request. At that time, the president, Florentino Perez, had the renovation and the edification of the Santiago Bernabeu stadium as the top priority in his mind. One thing led to another during this 'period of madness': Cristiano left the club and Zidane followed him just before the cookie crumbled.
He had no choice because Cristiano was the tripod on which the team stood; he built the famous treble-winning Madrid around the talisman and quintessential CR7. He knew that Madrid would not survive or achieve much without Cristiano and the unfolding events of the tumbling, fumbling and wobbling of Madrid throughout the trophyless, barren 18/19 season could attest to this fact.
Without disrespecting or demeaning the sterling qualities of other stars in that marvellous and outstanding treble-winning Madrid squad, it could be said without any controversy that the major personae and pillars of that squad were the indefatigable Cristiano and the grand conductor of the orchestra, Zidane.
In my opinion, the only major dents or setbacks during Florentino Perez's reigns were his horrible handling and mismanagement during these 'moments of strange madness' that led to the hurried and unplanned departure of the major pillars of that famous squad; Cristiano and Zidane.
Except for that reason of sheer madness, it is difficult to imagine how things could just go suddenly awry and bizzare for a club after the unmatchable success of lifting the champion league trophy for three times in a row. It was a costly 'moment of madness' that Madrid paid for dearly; changing four coaches within a single season; dwindling and dipping in gate fees/takings/revenue; trophyless 18/19 season; loss of confidence among the remaining players who desperately wanted to jump off the sinking ship to other clubs, etc.
As I watched the drab, uneventful and one-sided 18/19 CL final between Liverpool and Tottenham listlessly without interest, I felt really sorry for Madrid as it would've been another golden opportunity to claim the Champions League trophy if the treble-winning CL squad had remained intact under Zizou. The CL trophy would have been Madrid's for the asking.
Gladly, the coach has returned back just on time to continue winning titles for the club with the 34th La Liga title for the starters.
