'No one wanted to referee training games': Lauren on the competitive nature of Invincibles squad
We all know how good a team Arsene's class of 2003/04 was. We know about 49 undefeated, Rami Shaaban's broken leg.
However, the ruthless competition during training still makes us chuckle. Here's what Lauren had to day on the subject.
"When there was a game, Wenger would say: ‘Who’s the ref?’ Pat Rice, Paul Johnson, Boro Primorac … No one wanted it. Wenger was clever, eh: he got out of there, went to the corner, hid and just watched," he told The Guardian.
"Pat was the bravest and he’d end up arguing with everyone. There was argument after argument: Freddie with this guy, Martin with that guy, me with someone else. Bergkamp was a genius but he was also incredibly competitive. That’s why we won."
Fun times these were, folks. It's probably impossible to witness something like this again but we are hoping that, with time, a semblance of the former grandeur can be restored. Fingers crossed here.
