Retired Belgium striker names strange reason why he did not join Arsenal
Emile Mpenza, former Belgium international who played for the likes of Schalke 04, Hamburger and Manchester City, has revealed that he had to refuse Arsenal's offer in 1994 when he was a teenager.
"At 16, Arsenal wanted me, but my parents didn’t want to let me go without my brother, but Arsenal didn’t want Mbo. Only me," he said during an Instagram Live session as cited by Sport Witness.
"Regrets? No, I don’t blame my dad because at 16 I didn’t think I would become a professional."
Mpenza went on to score 19 goals in 57 appearances for Belgium before retiring from football in 2014.
The most fruitful period in the striker's career was between 2000 and 2003 when he played at Schalke 04. In the 2000-01 season, the Royal Blues lost the Bundesliga title to Bayern Munich in the dying minutes of the last matchday.
