Whats good and bad with the Europa league?
The dreaded Thursday night football. We all hate it, that we will have to play it next season. Just the thought of it gives me nightmares and I'm sure I'm not alone on that. And that's the obvious, just being the Europa league, and the fact that were not going to play in the best competition in europe, the one we belong in. Nope, next season we have to play in the second best european competition.
Another bad thing with the Europa league, is the finances and how that can go out on our transfers until we get back until the cl, or win a throphy. We've already lost some big sums to corona, and then the super league and what we can lose from wanting to participate there. By corona alone, liverpool has lost (so far):
46 million euros in pre-tax from the financial-ending year may 2020
A negative sum of 86 million euros from the sum we had 12 months ago
It's most likely going to cost 120 million euros (all together) before the fans can return.
So it's a big hit for the club already. Then, we have what we lost/are going to lose on the super league, as a punishment from both uefa and the premier league itself for us wanting to leave.
We've already lost 8 million euros alone by joining it.
Still awaits further losses from uefa or the premier league.
So summed up, we have already lost a lot of money on these two factors alone, and the uel won't help with fixing that, it can make it even worse.
Firstly, in the champions league (for as big as liverpool in the group stage), we're almost already guaranteed around 10 million euros, as every win in the group stage gives the club 2,4 million euros per win.
After that, it's the round of 16. When we exited the cl last season against atletico madrid, we had already earned over 70 million euros, which is already an astronomical paycheck. When we won the champions league in 2018/19, we got around 98 million euros, which again is absolutely insane numbers. Now, this season, before the round of 16 against rbl, we had already earned 30 million euros, plus what we got for passing rbl after that.
This means that we can look at in the end a loss on around 60-80 million euros alone on losing the cl, plus then covid and so on. We will also lose on sponsors, but that's not as serious as missing the competition itself.
Now, let's look at what can be good about losing the cl, and just saying that also gives me thoughts that there simply are no possible reasons for us to be happy or have good reason to miss the cl.
But let's start with the matches and the quality there. When we play in the CL, there is a system made for it to be a balanced group between teams ranked in different sections of the uefa ranking system, based on league, position and so on. Well, when we play in the uel, the competition won't be even close to the competition in the CL, which gives us time to rest our players for the big matches in other competitions.
You can say it's some decent teams here, but this is much easier than the cl competition, and who we have to play there
My next point here has something to do with what i just said, but by resting big players, we avoid them getting injured. That's the problem we've had all season, and we can also play the lads who don't get to play much, and boost the confidence of ox, Keita and many others.
The best part in my opinion, that may not have too much to say if we're back to our best next season, but i thought I'd include it: it's basically a free ticked back to the cl, by winning it, with the competition in the league, if we're at our best we would walk trough the uel and get back to the cl, with the best team in our way would be the likes of milan and ajax when they bottle their cl gruop again.

Good job man, I enjoyed it. Don't get too worried about money, not playing CL or even EL won't harm us too badly financially. The new RedBird deal will cover all our losses on ver the last 12 months. I'm not sure what rules have been changed to allow owners to do so, but they're allowed. And believe me when I say, players want to play for Liverpool under Klopp. Personally I, like David Hankins, would rather no European football if we can't have CL, it would give us a better run at the PL next season and I'd be more than happy to say that we'd have a great chance at winning the league again. I don't like the Thursday nights and Sunday morning games as I find teams seem to struggle with that for some reason. Good blog Thom, keep up the good work, but don't let it get in the way of school, I don't want you getting detention again🤣
Omg you put a lot of work into this blog. I can't believe how much stats you know Thom about Liverpool current finances. For now I am still a bit worried about us qualifying for the Europa League next season. As we've got the likes of West Ham Everton and Spurs still breathing down our necks. Well done Thom great blog. I can see you've put a lot of time into this.👍👍
