La Liga 2020/2021 Top Four Prediction & Season Preview

Real Madrid

The reigning, defending 2019/2020 La Liga Champions seem viable to repeat last season’s success, with the breakdown of Barcelona evident this summer it wouldn’t be surprising to see a challenge for the title come from elsewhere (Sevilla, Atletico Madrid).

With that said, if Real Madrid can keep just an ounce of their post-lockdown momentum, it’s going to be a struggle for any other team to stop them from claiming their thirty-fifth La Liga trophy.

To support our claim, SportsbookReview.com has Real Madrid as the favourites to claim the La Liga title this term.

Key Player

Sergio Ramos – Zidane’s most trusted, Sergio Ramos, leaves it all on the pitch. Last season he collected eleven goals; defensive efforts matched his goal-scoring making him the pillar of Madrid’s potential this term. Should Ramos project the same offensive and defensive numbers as the 19/20 season, it will take a miracle to prevent them from taking the title once again.

Barcelona

The runners-up in the La Liga last season should be relieved in knowing their star striker will remain at the club for at least one more year. After a complete meltdown towards the end of their season, Barcelona didn’t just finish ten points behind first-placed Madrid, but they were reduced to an 8-2 defeat against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

The club went into panic-mode however, with all the speculation that Lionel Messi was heading out the door, luckily for Barca they were able to keep Messi’s interests inside the Spanish league for at least one more season. The problem they face is the hatred towards Josep Maria Bartomeu who still has not resigned, despite the ominous presence of the club’s president.

Key Player

Lionel Messi – After requesting to be transferred, Barcelona fans protested outside the Camp Nou to proclaim their desire to keep him at the club. But we should note that if a legal battle were not surrounding his attempted departure, there is a good chance we would be watching Messi compete in a different league this season.

He will remain their key player, but his unhappiness at the club is evident. With that said, he is still Lionel Messi and politics will not reflect in his on-pitch performance.

Sevilla

If any team were to push through into this season’s title-race between Real Madrid & Barcelona, I could not think of a more deserving candidate than Sevilla. Finishing in the top-four of the La Liga was a great accomplishment but lifting the Europa League trophy for the sixth time was their main achievement.

Key Player

Lucas Ocampos – Fourteen goals and three assists through thirty-three La Liga appearances, Lucas Ocampos made his La Liga debut in style. Besides, he claimed 1.7 free kicks per-game on top of 2.1 dribbles per game. Maintaining these numbers could help push Sevilla into title contention this season.

Real Sociedad

Outsiders it may seem, but after last season’s success can Sociedad challenge for a top-four finish given their star signing of midfielder David Silva.

Last term they finished inside the top-six, awarding them with a place in the Europa League. As their confidence peaks, I put Sociedad as the underdog’s to shock everyone and finish in the top-four in the 2020/2021 La Liga Season.

Key Player

David Silva – Perhaps the most significant signing throughout the entire La Liga this summer, David Silva will make his La Liga debut for Sociedad coming in from Manchester City.

We don’t often put a new signing as the highest regarded player, but this is David Silva. His respect on the pitch has already been earnt, and now he’ll replace Martin Odegaard and honestly, will likely provide a more diverse skillset to his fellow attackers than his predecessor.
