‘Is it allowed’? Man United youngster spotted wearing Apple Watch during Premier League game

Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe was pictured wearing an Apple watch during his side's 2-1 loss to Leicester City in the Premier League on Tuesday.

A fan on Twitter @KimJohnFlop asked if wearing something like that is allowed for players.

"Is that allowed? (Genuinely asking)," the user tweeted.

From our research, players are not allowed to wear any form of electronic or communication device during games.

An excerpt from Law 4 of the FA rulebook states: "Players (including substitutes/substituted and sent-off players) are not permitted to wear or use any for of electronic communication equipment (except where EPTS is allowed)."

On why Tuanzebe was allowed to wear the watch, we refer to a section in the FA rulebook that states:

"Where wearable technology (WT) as part of electronic performance and tracking systems (EPTS) is used in matches played in an official competition organised under the auspices of FIFA, confederations or national football associations, the competition organiser must ensure that the technology attached to the players’ equipment is not dangerous and meets one of the following standards: IMS (International Match Standard) or FIFA Quality."

If Tuanzebe's watch was deemed not dangerous and permitted by FIFA then there's no problem with that.

Albeit, Tuanzebe may have gotten away with wearing the watch because the referee or his assistants didn't spot it. If you look at the picture you'd notice it's almost covered by his sleeve.
