The Athletic: Werner receives offer from Barca but holding out for Liverpool switch

According to tier-one source, The Athletic, Barca's target Timo Werner is waiting for Premier League giants Liverpool to decide whether they need him.

The outlet claims that the RB Leipzig star has offers from Barcelona and Manchester United already tabled but Liverpool appear to be his preferred destination.

Werner's reported release clause of £51 million makes his move quite realistic for both Barca and Liverpool. As per an unnamed 'key source', the Reds are going to start negotiations with Werner's representatives in the middle of March if Jurgen Klopp gives the green light to the transfer.

On paper, Liverpool have enough attacking options. However, the Reds are expected to part ways with Adam Lallana and Xherdan Shaqiri in the summer, The Athletic claim.

Moreover, Liverpool's front three are all more or less of the same age: Roberto Firmino turns 29 in October, while Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah both turn 28 in the next four months.

That means Liverpool need younger attackers to provide the generational change. Werner, aged 23, fits their plan perfectly.

As for the Catalans, the RB Leipzig man is believed to be one of the potential candidates to replace Luis Suarez.

Timo has also been heavily linked with a move to a host of other European big clubs like Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Manchester City, Juventus, and Paris Saint-Germain.
