According to Spanish Marca, Barcelona are going to ask Ernesto Valverde to communicate his final decision regarding his future in the coming February. The Catalans put a lot of effort into preserving the continuity of the managerial cycles as the last coach to be sacked mid-season is Louis Van Gaal in 2003.
Valverde's contract with Barcelona runs out in summer 2019 but the coach has an option of extending it for one more year without having to sign a new deal. The Spanish tactician is yet to make the decision and the club want him to make it in February at the latest in order for the management board to have enough time to find an negotiate a deal with a new head coach.
"Coaches go from day to day and week to week," Valverde told reporters at one of the most recent press conferences implying that it is not the right time for him to announce his future plans.
Despite constant criticism aimed at Ernesto Valverde, there haven't been any rumours regarding his potential replacement until recently. According to a report by a reputable Italian news outlet, Corriere dello Sport, Sassuolo coach Roberto De Zerbi is contemplated by Barcelona to succeed Ernesto Valverde as the head coach in case the manager decides not to renew his contract.
