Pique: 'White kit? Why not? It's part of our history'

Quite surprisingly, the centre-back has nothing against wearing Madrid colours... as long as he is playing for Barcelona.

After new checkered Blaugrana shirt has been officially announced as the one Barca will be wearing in 2019/20 season, Spanish newspaper Ara wondered if Gerard Pique would wear a white shirt - a design last used by the Catalans in the 70s and clearly associated with their rivals, Real Madrid.

Surprisingly, Pique has not only found the time to answer this rhetorical question but also confirmed that he has nothing against playing in white jersey.

"Yes, of course! It's part of our history," the centre-back reacted via his Twitter account.

The last time Barca kit featured white elements was a Kappa shirt in the early 1990s, which caused quite a stir in the fanbase. However, it doesn't mean that Barcelona never wore white through their history. One of the most notorious occasions, when they did it, was on Christmas Day in 1955, as we can find out from the article on 'The Sports World of Ibes' blog:

'During the first edition of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup (before becoming the UEFA Cup and now known as the Europa League), Barca played with the white shirt against FC Copenhagen at their home, Les Corts on Christmas Day in 1955. The reason behind Barca playing with the white shirt on that day was because it was meant to represent the city of Barcelona. Moreover, the white shirt did not have the Barca crest, but instead, displayed the coat of arms of the city of Barcelona.'

Barcelona’s away loss to Ipswich on March 7, 1979, would mark the final time the white shirt would be worn by the Blaugrana.

Interestingly, back in February Nike proposed a white design for the Barcelona away kit for 2020/21 season.

Nike's concept:

According to Catalan news outlet Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have outright rejected Nike's design for the away kit which is predominately white in colour. Who knows, maybe Pique's opinion would make the board reconsider their decision...

What do you think? Would you buy a white-coloured Barca kit?
