Barcelona set to 'complete the purchase' of Sao Paulo starlet Gustavo Maia: Agent

Barcelona will activate the release clause of Sao Paulo teenage prospect Gustavo Maia, according to the player's agent Danilo Silva.

"We are sure Barcelona will complete the purchase," Silva told Radio Transamerica (h/t Goal).

"There was already a signal from the club and [on Monday] Maia started private Spanish lessons to get more prepared.

"Other clubs came to us in the last few months but he never had any doubt, he always wanted Barcelona."

Sao Paulo director Alexandre Passaro, meanwhile, says that the Brazilian club haven't been yet notified by the Catalans about their intention to sign Maia and the deal is far from being done.

"Whether he will go to Barcelona or not, we can't be sure, because they have until June 30 to notify us and they still haven't," said Passaro.

"The last time I spoke to them they said everything is very uncertain.

"La Liga set the restart of games for June 11. Who knows, they may give us a signal in the next 30 days to find out whether Maia is going or not."

As a reminder, Barca paid €1 million to acquire the purchase option of the talented attacker in March.

They would be required to pay Sao Paulo a further €3.5m to lure him to Catalonia permanently.

The economic condition of the club has reportedly reopened the debate as to whether to sign the winger or not this summer.

As it stands, a final decision is yet to be made by the Blaugrana hierarchy.

Given the meagre sum involved, it is likely the club would eventually pull off the transfer and move the player into the youth setup to continue with his development.
