'It's a bad idea, football has to stay united': Arsene Wenger slams proposed European Super League

Speaking of the proposed European Super League on talkSPORT, Arsene Wenger has said: "I would say that's a bad idea. Football has to stay united, it's the most important thing.

"It's based on sporting merit and overall to respect the history that has been built from European football. I believe, personally, that this idea will not go far.

"I don't know what exactly is behind [it]. There is a more dangerous idea behind it and it's a big threat for the Premier League.

"When I was still in charge [at Arsenal] other countries tried to diminish the dominance of the Premier League and a project like that would accelerate that."

Pep Guardiola: 'Sport is not a sport when success is guaranteed'

“Sport is not a sport when success is guaranteed, and when the relation between the effort and reward don’t exist,” Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has said of the proposed European Super League.

“It’s not a sport when it doesn’t matter if you lose. It's not fair if teams fight at the top and cannot qualify.

"I would love the [Super League] president of the committee to go out around the world and explain how we got this decision."

Guardiola has become the second manager of the 12 ESL founding clubs to reject the idea of the new breakaway competition after Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp on Monday.

Atalanta defender Gosens on Super League: 'People are dying all over the world and 12 clubs are shoving €150m up their asses'

"People are still dying all over the world, and there's not enough money. These twelve clubs are founding their own league and getting 100 or 150 million shoved up their asses. The sad thing is at the end of the day: it's all about money, money, money," Atalanta defender Robin Gosens has told Kicker.

In fact, every of the breakaway European Super League 12 founding members, including Barcelona, is set to get €350m for just joining the new mid-week tournament.

The ESL first chairman Florentino Perez, meanwhile, continue to insist that the proposed Super League will help to 'save football' amidst the Covid-19 crisis.
