Assistant Schreuder set to lead Barca vs Valencia — key things to know about him

Ronald Koeman won't be able to sit on Barcelona's bench during the game against Valencia after picking up a red card in the previous match. In his absence, assistant coach Alfred Schreuder is set to lead the team.

As a footballer, Schreuder played as a midfielder. He had a long-lived career that lasted for 18 years, although he never left the Netherlands, having played for clubs like Feyenoord, RKC Waalwijk, and NAC Breda.

The Dutchman started his coaching career as an assistant at the Eredivisie club Vitesse.

The 48-year-old worked at Ajax under Erik ten Hag during the 2018/19 season, helping the Eredivisie outfit reach the Champions League semi-finals.

It's believed that he had a close bond with the dressing room and played a big role in building Ajax's tactics.

Besides, the Dutchman worked as Julian Nagelsmann's assistant between 2016 and 2018.

Last season, Schreuder was the head coach at Hoffenheim; they finished sixth in Bundesliga and qualified for the Europa League.

However, he had to depart from the club with four matches left in the 2019/20 season because of disagreements with the board.

Koeman reportedly won't be able to talk to assistants during Valencia game

Ronald Koeman will not have an opportunity to give instructions to his assistants during the upcoming La Liga clash against Valencia – someone from the staff will keep an eye on him, as per Mundo Deportivo.

Besides, the Dutchman won't be able to enter the locker room during the game. However, Koeman is expected to give the post-match press conference.

As a reminder, the manager picked up a red card in the Granada game for his controversial comments towards the fourth official. Barcelona confirmed appealing against that decision but there is no news on the Spanish FA decision.

Koeman labels his suspension 'exaggerated in jibe at La Liga referee committee

Ronald Koeman has had one too many brushes with referees and VAR this season.

It all culminated in a red card during the clash against Granada on Thursday.

Speaking in his press conference for the Valencia clash, Koeman confirmed that Barca will appeal his 2-game suspension while throwing another subtle jibe at La Liga referee committee.

"We are going to appeal my sanction because it is an exaggerated decision. They suspend you for 2 games for saying 'what a character'. I think they will suspend you for 20 games if you insult them," Koeman said

Koeman has come under intense criticism following the defeat to Granada. However, Barcelona still have the opportunity to win the league, although the Blaugrana have to turn out a 100 percent record in their last 5 games.
