Lowest earner at Barca and 3 more reasons why Gavi's contract extension is stalling

Barcelona have so far hit a roadblock in their effort to extend the contract of Gavi.

Here's why Gavi has not signed the dotted lines since the club started negotiations with him last year:

Lowest earner

Gavi is said to be the lowest earner in the Barcelona first team. The 17-year-old earns €100,000 per year at Barcelona. That's less than €2000 per week.

Given his performances with the first team, there's no reason why he would accept any pay package that's not significantly higher.

Better offers

It's no secret that clubs outside Spain are closely monitoring the development of Gavi's contract saga. The midfielder is powerful and looks built for the physical game in the Premier League.

It's possible that a big Premier League club like Liverpool may have reached out to Gavi to try and turn his head.

Release clause

Barcelona intends to place Gavi on a €1bn release clause. That would make it extremely difficult for any other club to sign him after he signs the contract.

Thus, if Gavi doesn't push to get a better deal now, he probably won't get it until he's 20 years old or more.

Club's inances

Barcelona do not have all the money to throw around as they used to in the past.

This is exactly why Ilaix Moriba left and why Dembele hasn't signed a new deal. Barca are being frugal and that's why they've not met Gavi's demands so far.
