As per reports at the time, Quique Setien could not win over the dressing room at Barcelona. One of the reasons for it was his strained relationship with then-captain Leo Messi.
In a recent interview, the 64-year-old coach shed more light on the issue.
"Everyone must preserve the image of Messi as a permanent footballing attraction. For 14 years I would wait for the moment to sit down on the couch and watch him play," Setien has said, as quoted by La Razon.
"I cannot say whether he disappointed me or not. There were things I liked and others I didn't like and had to fight against. There is always a player that you find more challenging to get along with. Otherwise, you have to accept them the way they are."
Messi, of course, wasn't the only player Setien had issues with. The Blaugrana players reportedly did not understand Quique's appointment and were hurt by Ernesto Valverde's dismissal.
