The Barcelona scouts were present at the recent match between Espanyol and Villarreal to 'spy on' right-back Juan Foyth and centre-back Jorge Cuenca, Mundo Deportivo's reliable Gabriel Sans reports.
Specifically, the club wanted to see right-back Juan Foyth and centre-back Jorge Cuenca perform live.
Barca showed interest in Foyth back in August but gave up the attempts to sign him after he suffered a serious injury. The 24-year-old made his return in the game against Espanyol.
As for Cuenca, he's a left-footed, agile centre-back – the exact profile the Catalans need.
Jorge played for Barca Atletic between 2017 and 2020 and even featured for the senior side once. However, he failed to break into the first team and was eventually sold to Villarreal for €2.5m plus add-ons.
Barca retain a buy-back option on the 22-year-old but the amount is not specified.
It is unclear whether Barca will make a move for the duo in January. In any case, Xavi reportedly prioritizes reinforcing the right-back position at the moment.
