Mexico legend Hugo Sanchez aims dig at Luis Enrique -- it has to do with Japan defeat

Last night in Qatar was a very dramatic one. A defeat to Japan almost cost Spain a place in the World Cup play-offs.

Luckily for La Roja, the parallel game's result was enough to finish second in the group.

In the aftermath of Thursday's games, Mexico legend Hugo Sanchez suggested Spain lost on purpose, as per ESPN.

"I assure you. I was not there and I’m not in the mind of Luis Enrique but he had thought about what was the best way to avoid playing Brazil in the quarter-finals.

"Yes, there is a risk [to be eliminated], but it’s a risk worth taking. It’s not that they fear Brazil, but they respect them.

"The coach is never going to admit it. Managers don’t say: 'I let them win".

Enrique's men are now on the opposite side of the bracket and can only face Brazil or Argentina in the final.

Japan, meanwhile, would play Brazil if they beat Croatia.
