This is particularly interesting considering that some reports in recent months indicated that Mateu Alemany was actually against Messi’s return to the club and had pushed against it.

“With Xavi, we talked about the possibility of me coming back. We were very excited. We kept in communication. Barcelona sent me an offer, but 

never sent me an official, signed, written offer.

“So many things have been said, so many things have been leaked, so many lies were told, but I cannot go out and deny everything that's being said.

“When the media mess with my family and start talking about things they don't know anything about, that bothers me a bit.”

So it’s cleared by Messi himself that he did have talks with Barca officials over a move. However, he didn't get an official offer that could actually convince him to rejoin the Blaugrana - which is why he opted to join Inter Miami.

Speaking to Sport about the decision and why he didn't rejoin 

, he said: "I’m not going back to Barça, I'm going to Inter Miami.

"I really wanted to return, I was very excited to be able to return, but, on the other hand, after having experienced what I experienced when I left, I didn't want to be in the same situation again.

"Although I heard that La Liga had accepted my return and everything was fine, many other things also needed to happen. 

"I heard that Barcelona had to sell players or lower player salaries and the truth is that I didn't want to go through that.

"When I left, La Liga had also accepted that they could register me and in the end it couldn't be done

"I wanted to make my own decision and that's why I didn't return to Barça. Although I would have loved it, it couldn't be."
