"Barcelona approached me, but their president [Bartomeu], didn't want me because I'm from Canada," Alphonso Davies has said for a podcast, via Carpetas Blaugranas.
"I won't lie, it kind of crushed my feelings, although this is what came out in the media. I don’t know if their president actually said this," he added.
After Alphonso Davies won the Champions League with Bayern Munich in 2020, it was revealed that Josep Maria Bartomeu had been recommended to sign the wing-back when he played in Canada. The president reportedly rejected the opportunity because of the player's nationality.
Even though it's not confirmed officially, we wouldn't be surprised if this was actually true. Bartomeu's reign was a complete mess filled with crazy scandals and controversies – this might be just one of them.
Davies' current deal with Bayern expires in 2025. Real Madrid are said to be the favourites to sign him next year.
