Lamine Yamal could decide to switch nationality today and play for Morocco at the AFCON in January 2024 if he so wishes. That's because the rules of the game permit him to do that.
What? Indeed Yamal has played three games for Spain and scored two excellent goals doing so, all in the space of two months.
However, FIFA regulations allow a player to switch nationality to another country until they have been capped four or more times by one country.
Lamine has three caps for Spain which makes him eligible to switch nationality and play for Morocco, his father's country. Or even for Equatorial Guinea, where his mother was born.
Okay, that's never happening. Yamal has been included in Spain's squad for the international break and will most likely play his fourth match for Spain this week before he returns to Barca.
The sensational teenager is tipped to feature prominently for Spain in Euro 2024. Good luck to defenders trying to stop him.
