'There will be a lot of love made tonight': recalling how Pique predicted birth rate spike in Catalonia

Andres Iniesta's wondergoal against Chelsea in the Champions League semi-final on May 6, 2009, sparked huge celebrations in Barcelona.

As crowds were gathering near the Caneletes fountain on Las Ramblas, Gerard Pique joked: "There will be a lot of love made in Barcelona tonight!"

Pique's prediction turned true: nine months on from Iniesta's golazo, the birth rate skyrocketed in Catalonia.

"We are up from an average of nine to 10 births a day to 15 a day," said Mercedes Rodriguez, the head midwife at the city's Quiron Hospital in 2010 (h/t Daily Mail).

Interestingly, the babies born at that time were commonly referred to as 'Iniesta's children'.
