Xavi has lamented Barcelona’s inability to properly replace Sergio Busquets and strengthen their defensive midfield position this season.
Speaking on the importance of that role, he remarked: “We’ve played many games without a natural defensive midfield pivot and that has damaged our season.
“When we have picked Oriol (Romeu) or Andreas (Christensen) we’ve competed better. But, it’s a coaching error. This lack of dominance in midfield has weighed heavily on us. The target for next season is to have every position covered by two players.”
Barca are also making moves to improve their defensive midfield area and are reportedly set to sign Argentine midfielder Guido Rodriguez on a free transfer in tehs ummer.
However, the Blaugrana might opt to sign another defensive midfielder to add more steel and composure to their side. They have been linked to Bayern Munich man Joshua Kimmich, but financial difficulties could make it harder to sign him in the summer.
