Former Barcelona director Jordi Cruyff has revealed why the club went all in to spend up to €50m on a 34-year-old Robert Lewandowski from Bayern in 2022.
"The most important reason why we signed Lewandowski was because it was his dream to play at Barca. He had that motivation and wanted to leave Bayern," Cruyff said in his chat with Fabrizio Romano.
"When you know that he is willing to make a lot of effort to come, even financially, you need to sign him," Cruyff said.
Xavi reportedly wanted Barca to offload Lewandowski this summer but the club were against it.
Barca may have a good reason though. For the past two seasons, Lewandowski has finished as the club's top scorer.
The Polish striker won the Pichici Award last term and could win it again this season if he scores seven goals in Barca's final game of the season against Sevilla. Okay, that's not happening.
