Man City defender Benjamin Mendy is currently in prison after being charged with a total of six counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. However, several media outlets have some trouble identifying the accused player.
More than one report about the case featured images of Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, while there was also an occasional photo of Real Madrid left-back Ferland Mendy.
Chelsea's Mendy did not hold it back when he addressed the controversy on social media.
"It's sad to see that in 2021, both in France and in England, for some people, black people don't have separate first names or faces," the keeper posted on Instagram alongside a collage of reports that confused the footballers' names.
"These 'mistaken' photos might appear to be anecdotal, but they are incredibly symbolic.
"Still, it isn't difficult to differentiate two faces, especially when the different jerseys they wear are a great help!"
