Just when you thought the Didier Deschamps – Karim Benzema saga was over, it came back.
In an interview with Le Parisien, the 2018 World Cup champion gave his version of why Karim did not feature in Qatar.
"He said to me, It’s over.’ Our doctor’s diagnosis matched the one we gave him in Madrid. At best, his return to training could not intervene before December 10… When I left him, I told him: ‘Karim, there is no urgency. You organize your return with the team manager.’
When I woke up, I learned that he was gone. It was his decision, he won’t tell you otherwise, I understand and respect it."
In fact, Karim did tell otherwise. He took to Instagram to respond.
"The audacity of this clown", the message reads.
"Liar Didier. Good night."
The conflict between these two saw Benzema retire from international football.
To add some drama, the Ballon d'Or winner announced it on his birthday, a day after Argentina beat France in the final.
