How Zidane’s advice stopped Benzema from joining Manchester United

Karim Benzema is receiving well-deserved recognition from football fans all over the world. The Real Madrid striker has been in top form lately, making him one of the most trending names in football.

Even fans of other teams can't help but dream of having a player like Benzema in their squad, but unfortunately, it remains just that, a dream. Rio Ferdinand expressed his disappointment about not having played alongside Benzema in his career.

He revealed an interesting fact about the French striker's transfer to Real Madrid in 2009:

"I absolutely love Benzema," Ferdinand told BT Sport. "I played against him when he was a young player at Lyon. I was hugely impressed and Manchester United were trying to sign him then but he went to Madrid, under Zidane’s words and advice."

"It looks like it has been a match made in heaven. What I love about Benzema is that he is a player who could possibly be one of the most humblest players."

"He sacrificed a lot of his own game because he knew what Cristiano [Ronaldo] brought and he knew Cristiano would enable him to win more if he sacrificed his own game. That is a big thing to do for a player knowing how good he is."
