Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings is set to miss the majority of the season after damaging knee

Tyrone Mings is facing a tough road ahead as he deals with knee ligament damage suffered during Aston Villa's loss to Newcastle on the opening day.

The England defender was carried off on a stretcher during the first half, and the initial worries were justified – his injury is quite serious. This setback means Mings, a key player for Unai Emery, will be out for a significant portion of the season.

Villa had already been hit hard with another knee injury, as Emiliano Buendia damaged his anterior cruciate ligament in training last week.

With Diego Carlos, Pau Torres, and Calum Chambers in the mix, there's cover for Mings, but his leadership will be sorely missed. Despite losing the captaincy last year, Mings still plays a vocal and influential role in the squad.

Mings took a moment on social media to express his gratitude to the fans for their support and to the Newcastle staff for their assistance.

He tweeted: "I don’t even know where to start but to say thank you for all of your messages of support Villa fans. From the day I came here on loan I’ve given everything on the pitch, I’ll now give everything off the pitch to come back even better, whilst supporting the team."

"To the players, fans & staff connected to Newcastle, I also want to say thank you. The applause, the messages & the medical support I received on the day was really appreciated."
