Are Saudis giving €29m transfer away for free because of gay rumours? Answered

Portuguese winger Jota only joined Al Ittihad last month but might be already on his way out.

According to careless whispers on social media, the decision might have nothing to do with his ability — he's more than good enough after scoring 15 and assisting 12 goals for Celtic last season.

Rather, it's rumoured to be Jota's 'lifestyle' that forces Al Ittihad to get rid. Some are even speculating that Jota is gay and being gay is punishable by death in Saudi Arabia.

However, there's no ground to suggest Jota is gay — even if he looks like a young George Michael. Even common sense says why would someone gay go to Saudi Arabia to put his life in danger?

A more likely explanation is that Jota won't fit into Al Ittihad's Asian Champions League quota of five players born outside of Asia — Cristiano Ronaldo's team are facing a similar problem.

Maybe the Saudis themselves didn't expect so many top players to join them and have much better players than Jota earmarked for the non-Asian slot.

Why they would let Jota go for free is another matter. Maybe there would simply be no buyer since the player is not wanted, or maybe because money is not a problem there.
