Paulo Dybala's unusual €13m transfer clause kicks in today — why it has to do with Higuain

Paulo Dybala is available for a bargain price as his €13m release clause became active on January 1, Gazzetta dello Sport report.

However, the release clause applies only to foreign clubs — Roma reserve the right to reject all offers from Italian sides.

Exclusionary clauses such as this one have become widespread after Juventus bought Gonzalo Higuain in 2016. They triggered a €90m release clause, denting Napoli's hopes of winning the Serie A title the following season. Since then, Italian clubs have tried to make sure that if they sell a player, at least he won't go to a domestic rival.

Dybala for €13m looks like a great deal for almost any Premier League club. He has four goals and six assists in 12 Serie A appearances for Roma so far this season and comes with a wealth of experience.
