Eighteen-year-old Emilio lost control of his quad bike. The vehicle fell on top of Ballack Jr and doctors were unable to save him.
The tragedy happened near Michael's villa in Portugal. He had gathered his three children there for a family barbecue.
It is known that Ballack struggled to come to terms with his son's death and sought help from psychologists. Model Sophia Schneiderman, with whom Ballack Jr. had been friends since childhood, was also devastated.
The loss brought Ballack Sr. and Schneiderman closer together. The couple were spotted together for the first time in Berlin, and were even seen kissing.
Sophia was only 21 at the time, while Ballack was already 45.
