'Most respectful and intense': Joleon Lescott names the best rivalry of the Premier League era

Joleon Lescott believes the showdowns between Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp might be the top rivalry in Premier League history. With Klopp leaving at the end of the season, the recent 1-1 draw at Anfield marked their last Premier League encounter.

Yet, the chance remains for City and Liverpool to clash in the FA Cup quarter-finals. Lescott suggests it could turn into an epic final if both teams make it through.

"It’s the most respectful and intense rivalry of such high quality there is," the former Man City defender said on Matchday Live.

"The Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger was magnified and aggressive, whereas this was ultimate respect. It would be a good final. I don’t want to get them in the semis. There’s no Anfield, we’d be playing at Wembley so it’s different!"

Guardiola and Klopp shared a hug after the game ended at Anfield. Another guest on Matchday Live Izzy Christiansen mentioned that the match marked an amazing conclusion to their eight-season-long rivalry.

"You look at the two managers at the end and if that is the last time, they know that they are that close in terms of what they do, a 1-1 draw in the grand scheme of things might look like a fairytale ending for them both."

"That one of them hasn’t gone out with a win over the other. The rivalry between those two has been unbelievable to watch."

The Klopp vs. Guardiola matchup stands at: 12 wins for Klopp, 6 draws, and 11 losses. Can Pep get his twelfth win against Klopp in the FA Cup and end this rivalry with an equal score? We'll see!
