'Know your limits': England fans warned before the trip to Germany for Euro 2024

Fans heading to the Euros in Germany this summer are being cautioned about the strength of beer in the country compared to what they're used to in the UK.

The Foreign Office has released new guidance for fans making arrangements for the tournament following the conclusion of the final qualifying matches.

The advice covers various aspects, including a reminder that German beer tends to be stronger than the lager typically consumed in the UK. Additionally, fans are warned that getting too drunk could result in being banned from entering stadiums.

It said: "Beer can be stronger than in the UK, so drink responsibly, know your limits and respect local laws. You may not be let into the stadium if you drink too much."

According to Drinkaware, the average strength of lager and ale in the UK is around 4.4 per cent ABV (alcohol by volume). In contrast, beers in Germany are typically stronger, ranging from 4.7 to 5.4 per cent ABV, with some even reaching up to 16 per cent ABV.

This difference in strength can catch out British visitors leading to instances where hospitals in Germany need to treat intoxicated Britons who underestimated the potency of the beer.
