Emi Martinez sets unwanted Premier League record in Liverpool clash

Emi Martinez is the best at scoring own goals! Aston Villa keeper set an unwanted record by becoming the first goalkeeper to let in three own goals in Premier League history during their 3-3 draw against Liverpool.

In the opening minutes at Villa Park, Martinez made a costly error. Failing to secure Harvey Elliott's deflected cross, the Argentine goalkeeper inadvertently directed the ball over his own goal line, despite his earnest attempts to prevent it.

This marks his third own goal in the Premier League, setting a record for goalkeepers since the league's restructuring in 1992. He scored own goals vs Liverpool (2024), Arsenal (2023) and Man United (2022).

Among others, Mark Bunn, Petr Cech, Shay Given, Rob Green, Kasper Schmeichel, Russell Hoult, Tom Heaton, Tim Krul, Bernd Leno, Jussi Jaaskelainen, and Richard Wright have each scored two own goals, while 53 goalkeepers have only scored one.
