Liverpool told they're 'over-reliant' on Salah — fan brilliantly shows why it's wrong with one Haaland stat

In the Guardian's 10 talking points from Premier League action, journalist Jonathan Wilson has analysed Liverpool's win against Crystal Palace.

"A cynic might point out that a team with this many question marks in defence and midfield that is still over reliant on the output of Mohamed Salah up front, is ill-equipped to challenge in the long run. An optimist might counter that if a Liverpool this flawed can still top the table, imagine what they can do when they hit their stride," Wilson writes.

Writing in the comments section of the article, a Liverpool fan nicknamed Dubhghaill brilliantly showed why Wilson is wrong.

"Perception is everything. But it's also incredibly flawed and even strange," Dubhghaill wrote.

"A 'myth' I'd like to gently explode is that of "overreliance" on Salah... at the weekend Harvey Elliott became Liverpool's 12th goalscorer in the league already this season (the highest number in the division). Salah has accounted for 11 of the 36 goals they've scored.

"This compares well to say, City — the only team which has scored more than Liverpool — for whom Haaland has pilfered 14 of their 38 goals with 8 others contributing to the effort. In short, City are quantitatively more reliant on Haaland than Liverpool are on Salah.

"Over the last week alone Trent, MacAllister, Endo, Szoboszlai, Van Dijk and Elliott have all scored, with midfield and defence therefore contributing 7 of the 8 goals Liverpool have scored.

"So it's a bit strange, I have to say, to see Liverpool's ability to win the league doubted on those two grounds in particular.

"On the other hand, what's encouraging, as a Liverpool fan, is seeing that despite injuries to maybe 7 players who might reasonably expect a spot in the first team, or at least the first 16 (Robertson, Matip, Thiago, Jota, Matip, Bajcetic, and Alisson/ MacAllister), Liverpool have still been able to call on the bench to make game winning contributions twice in the last week. It speaks to a squad which has perhaps become the division's best over the last six months, somehow, despite a relatively low spend."
