'I was directly a Nazi for many people: blond, blue eyes...': Kroos opens up on online abuse

Toni Kroos reveals he was called a Nazi on social media after his voicing his displeasure at the manner in which Mesut Ozil retired from the national team in 2018.

"After the 2018 World Cup I said that I did not like the retirement of Mesut Ozil and the manner in which he did it and then I was directly a Nazi for a lot of people: blond, blue eyes… everything fit for a lot of people.

“I managed to overcome it, no one can hide behind a fake profile and then insult other people with almost no problem."

Mesut Ozil had a very public fallout with the DFB (German Football Association) after he said he was unfairly scapegoated for Germany's catastrophic World Cup campaign.

While it's unlikely we'll find out the whole truth behind the story - whether or not Ozil was racially abused by the Federation's officials - calling Kroos a Nazi for speaking his mind is appalling. We are hoping the culprits have been identified and punished for it.
