'One lethargic performance after another': fan shares his concerns over Marco Asensio's protracted dip in form

"Particularly disappointed with Asensio," AhmoqQurbaqa wrote on Reddit. "He got so many chances and trust from Zidane - regularly played after his injury, Zidane was patient with him, used him on flanks, moved more central, albeit briefly, tried upfront with Karim.

"In return, he got nothing to show in the past 6-7 games, with overall 2G+2A in 24 League games.

"It would be forgivable if he somehow covered this inefficiency with higher work rate, but no. Often times, he loses his direct opponent, doesn’t press with intensity, tends to switch off for considerable spells of time during games.

"Vini the Pooh comes to mind in this respect. Yes, he might have a lot to improve upfront, although the last 2-3 games were really positive from him, but the kid works hard. He is always noted alongside Mendy, helping to defend, tracking back.

"Only reason, Asensio being a starter was the absence of Eden and Rodrygo. The latter is back now, and I would be really surprised if Zidane continues to start Marco, one lethargic performance after another.

"On paper, he has got skills, no doubt. He is quick, with a good vision and pass, also got a glorious shooting ability from different ranges. But what is the use, if he doesn’t demonstrate even half of them and just watches football on the pitch."

The forward joined Real Madrid form Mallorca in 2014 for a fee of €4m.

Since joining Los Blancos, the 25-year-old has scored 32 goals and bagged 22 assists in 177 appearances.
