'If it hadn't been for Real Madrid I would never have got this far': How Eto’o was forced to apologize publicly for a chant

In the aftermath of Barcelona's league title success in 2005, Samuel Eto'o celebrated by chanting "Madrid, bastards, hail the champions" into the microphone.

Nearly 100,000 Barca fans in the stadium joined the Cameroonian in reechoing the chant. Eto'o was later fined €12,000 for his action.

However, in a press conference the following week, Eto'o apologized:

"I would like to ask forgiveness for what I said. One thing is what you think and another is what you say.

"I would like to ask the fans, the club and anyone else who might have felt offended to accept a thousand apologies from me.

"I never wanted to show any lack of respect to anyone. "What happened was that in a moment of joy I started to sing and that was all.

"If it hadn't been for Real Madrid I would never have got this far, so I beg forgiveness and hope that people will understand me."

Eto'o was part of Real Madrid Castilla back in 1997 but was later loaned following their relegation to Segunda B.

The striker never appeared for the senior team as he was farmed out on loan to Espanyol and Mallorca before signing for Barcelona in 2004.
