Isco leaves Sevilla 4 months into new contract: 3 reasons why

Sevilla have confirmed the departure of Isco just four months after he joined them as a free agent.

When Isco joined Sevilla last summer, he seemed like a perfect fit for the Andalusian club. A 30-year-old midfielder with a winning mentality and a wealth of experience to back it up.

Here's why Isco's marriage with Sevilla hit the rocks so early.

1. Monchi didn't want him. Sevilla sporting director Monchi was against the idea of signing Isco from the outset - even with the midfielder agreeing to reduce his salary. However, Julen Lopetegui, pushed for the transfer at the time and Monchi reluctantly obliged.

2. Lopetegui's sack. This didn't bode well for Isco. Lopetegui, a former Real Madrid coach, was the only man who really wanted Isco in Sevilla. His sacking in October was the writing on the wall for Isco.

3. Not rated by Sampaoli. Isco contributed one goal and three assists in his 19 appearances for Sevilla. It's more than he managed for Real Madrid all through last season but his performances were still below par and Sevilla's new boss Jorge Sampaoli just didn't rate him. He ultimately gave Monchi the go-ahead to pull the plug.

Isco is likely to remain in Spain for the rest of the season. There are many mid-table La Liga teams who would gladly take him.

Isco played for Real Madrid between 2013 and 2022. He played 353 games scoring 53 goals and winning 19 trophies including 5 Champions Leagues.
