Gabriel apologizes after brutal tackle on Vinicius, La Liga confirms measly suspension

Valencia's centre-back Gabriel Paulista was sent off during the Thursday match against Real Madrid after a violent tackle on Vinicius Junior.

The defender made a public apology the next day on Instagram.

"I accept the criticism and the red card, I'm not proud of it. I am a harsh player, but also noble. I respect Vinicius and it was never my intention to hurt him," Gabriel writes.

"We are suffering a lot at this great club, experiencing a very difficult situation and feelings are running high. Sometimes it is difficult to control the nerves. I didn't control them and I sincerely apologize. I apologize to the fans. We will continue fighting until the end to reverse this situation. Let no one doubt us."

If we take a look at the foul, it is obvious that Gabriel had no intentions to play the ball and actually wanted to hurt Vinicius.

Despite the clear act of aggression, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has suspended the centre-back for only two matches.

As Colin Millar correctly noted, Real Betis's midfielder William Carvalho was also suspended for two games after telling the referee that his "decisions were really bad."
