Why Nico Paz plays for Argentina despite being born in Spain

Nico Paz has featured for Argentina's U-21 National Team recently, and it surprised many Real Madrid fans: why would the Madrid starlet, who was born and raised in Spain, play for the Albiceleste?

Here's what Nico's father told Marca:

"Nico never actually did choose Argentina over Spain, the thing is the Spanish team never called him. The opportunity came up from Argentina, and Nico loved the idea of playing for a national team, so he took it. Plus, he could train with Messi, who is an idol.

"If Spain called him, I don't know what Nico would do then, if you ask me I think right now he might stick with his team in Argentina… but he isn't me. It depends on the moment, his feelings for Spain, what they put on the table. He will choose whatever he feels, and by himself."

Nico can switch from Argentina to Spain when the time comes to play for the senior team. His father's words suggest the family are waiting for a call from Spain. Obviously, such a talent would be disappointed to not receive one.

Nico's father, Pablo Paz, is an Argentinian of Spanish descent. After he came to play for Tenerife, he married a Spanish woman and Nico was born in Spain. That makes Paz Jr. more Spanish than Argentinean.
