Nike and number of top brands accused of using Uighur 'forced labor' in factories across China
  • According to the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (via Daily Sabah), such top brands as Nike, Apple, BMW, Gap, Huawei, Samsung, Sony and Volkswagen have been using Uighur labour in factories across China.
  • "Under conditions that strongly suggest forced labour, Uighurs are working in factories that are in the supply chains of at least 83 well-known global brands in the technology, clothing and automotive sectors, including Apple, BMW, Gap, Huawei, Nike, Samsung, Sony and Volkswagen," the ASPI said in their report.
  • As per the report, more than 80,000 ethnic Uighurs have been moved from the western region of Xinjiang to work in a network of at least 27 factories in nine Chinese provinces.
  • The report also said that the transfers of labour were eased by a state-sponsored program.
  • The workers who "lead a harsh, segregated life," are tracked electronically and restricted from returning to Xinjiang, according to the ASPI.
