Unconventional leader: why Hector Bellerin should be Arsenal captain

In a recent interview, Hector Bellerin claimed that he is captain material. Even though many don't see him, a 5 ft 10 in (178cm) full-back with a history of injuries and recent below-par displays, as the best choice to wear the armband, we think that he's the perfect candidate for the role.

  • Hale End graduate

The Spaniard joined Arsenal Academy when he was 16. He rose through the ranks and made his debut in 2013 as a substitute for... Mikel Arteta.

While the Gunners are rightfully proud of their tradition of nurturing talent, it's been a long time since a player coming from the Academy captained the team.

  • One of the longest-serving players at Arsenal

In the summer, it will be nine years since Hector joined the Gunners. The 25-year-old knows the club inside out and how everything works at the Emirates.

Only Emi Martinez has been at the club longer than Bellerin but the goalkeeper spent several seasons away on loans.

Hector is a true Gunner:

  • Not afraid to say what he thinks

In December last year, Bellerin posted a simple message on Twitter. Commenting on the British general election, he shared his opinion on Boris Johnson.

You may not agree with the full-back's assessment of the politician. However, you should give him credit for speaking out in a time when most footballers prefer to keep their opinions to themselves in order not to lose sponsorship money or, even worse, because they have nothing to say.

  • Progressive values

It's not only Boris Johnson. The Spaniard is known for his support for gender equality and is among the most charitable players in the world of football. He's one of the very few vegans in sports.

Appointing Bellerin skipper would mean that Arsenal really support what Hector stands for and will bring many younger fans closer to the club.

  • Popular within the squad

The 25-year-old is described as a very cheerful and friendly person. Other players love him and we've never heard of him having any conflict with managers or other footballers.

Bellerin, as he himself admitted, does not possess a personality of Tony Adams or Patrick Vieira. The Spaniard is not 'a massive guy who shouts on the pitch all the time'. However, he is one of the leaders in the dressing room.

Very wise words about the infamous Granit Xhaka incident:

  • Warrior

Last year, the defender suffered a knee injury that kept him out for more than eight months. He still has not fully recovered yet but as Arsenal don't have a back-up right-back other than Ainsley Maitland-Niles, the Spaniard is often forced to play on painkillers.

It may explain his recent under-par performances but it also shows that Bellerin is ready to sacrifice himself when the team needs it. This is the quality that sets him apart as a true fighter.

Even though Hector will never be an old-school captain, he is a born leader both on and off the pitch. Yes, his leadership is not the one we're used to but Arsenal have been setting trends in English football since Arsene Wenger took charge at Highbury.
