Alan Shearer includes Aubameyang in his Premier League team of the season

Alan Shearer has selected his 2019/20 Premier League Team of the Season so far while football remains suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic, with one Arsenal player making the cut.

It perhaps does not come as a surprise that the only Gunner in the team is Pierre-Emerick Aubameyamg.

"With 17 Premier League goals, Aubameyang is just two behind top scorer Leicester's Jamie Vardy as he targets a second successive Golden Boot," said the former England international.

"The Gabon striker has pace to burn, brilliant movement and has scored consistently despite often being deployed out on the left."

Shearer's Premier League Team of the Season so far (4-2-4):

  • Goalkeeper: Dean Henderson (Sheffield United on loan from Man Utd)
  • Right-back: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)
  • Centre-back: Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool)
  • Centre-back: Jonny Evans (Leicester City)
  • Left-back: Andy Robertson (Liverpool)
  • Midfielder: Jordan Henderson (Liverpool)
  • Midfielder: Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City)
  • Forward: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Arsenal)
  • Forward: Sadio Mane (Liverpool)
  • Forward: Sergio Aguero (Manchester City)
  • Forward: Jamie Vardy (Leicester City)

This is not the first time Auba is named among best Premier League players by experts and former footballers.

For example, Soton legend Matt Le Tissier hailed the Gabonese's contribution while also aiming a slight dig at Arsenal.

"His goals defy logic in the side he is playing in and he has proved his importance to that team, carrying them at times with the goals he scores," said the former Saints fan favourite.

Strangely, Paul Merson preferred Jamie Vardy to Auba in his Ultimate XI. Here's how Merson explained his choice.

"[H]e has produced at the highest level," said the ex-Gunner. "He's recaptured his form and is back to the Vardy we all knew, and that Vardy is an absolute nightmare to play against.

"He's a prime example for any kid out there who wants to play football at the highest level. To come from where he's come from, it's an incredible story."

Aubameyang has found the net 17 times in 26 Premier League games this season. He has also provided one assist.
