Five substitutions per game, changes in VAR application and more: Premier League's new rules explained in less than 60 seconds

Possible rule changes when season resumes

  • Five subs per game: the IFAB has brought about this rule to ease the pressure on teams after the pandemic. Each team can make five substitutions per game - a rule that will be in effect until the end of this year.
  • No VAR? No problem: If needed, competitions can opt against using VAR technology but the Premier League is believed to be against the idea.

Rule changes from start of 2020-21 season

  • What about handballs?: Goals resulting from accidental handballs will be disallowed only if it 'results in a goal or an obvious opportunity for the player and or their team to score a goal. (i.e. following the handball, the ball travels only a short distance and/or there are very few passes).'
  • Referees will be allowed to use the on-field monitors whenever there is a subjective decision; IFAB has refused to let supporters listen to conversations between referees during a VAR review.
  • Penalty kick amendment: If a goalkeeper moves off his line before a kick is taken, he'll be punished only if he saves the penalty. If the penalty is missed, it won't be retaken regardless of the keeper's movement.
