Niles on winning mentality: 'That’s what we’ve been working on since lockdown'

Arsenal did great to come back from a 1-0 down and Ainsley Maitland-Niles insists the turnaround was made possible by a change in the team's mentality.

"That’s what we’ve been working on since lockdown, having a positive attitude, always wanting to win games even when we do go down, and playing our football no matter what happens," he told the club's official website.

"It prevailed today and it was fantastic to see the boys turn that around and really go all out attack to win the game for us.

"It’s the first time of grabbing it [the FA Cup] myself and it’s a fantastic feeling, it’s indescribable really. I’m proud of every one of my teammates and staff members for putting the plan into motion and we executed it perfectly."

Instilling the winning mentality is probably a key part of Mikel Arteta's cultural revolution at Arsenal.

The 38-year-old has shown his ruthless side on several occasions and wants his team to be unforgiving and even merciless when it comes to winning trophies.

The August 1 final, which saw Arteta win his first trophy as a manager, showed that he is on the right track and Arsenal's future is in the safe hands.

It is perhaps telling that Maitland-Niles, a player who had been overlooked by the Spaniard but won his place in the starting XI through determination and hard work, speaks about the change in mentality.
