Mix of Chambers and Bellerin, upgrade on both: fan explains why Ben White can play right-back

Ben White looks increasingly likely to join Arsenal for a fee around £50m.

Many fans don't understand why the Gunners want to spend so much money on a centre-back as we have a lot of quality players in that position.

White's asset is his versatility: he can play at centre-back, central midfield and right-back. And a fan nicknamed racerz can see the 23-year-old nailing a starting spot on the right-hand side.

"Yeah, I don't think it's that crazy," racerz wrote on Reddit about White playing at right-back.

"Arteta often drops in Chambers in possession to play as the third centre-back in a 3-5-2. If not Chambers, it's Xhaka, giving up a midfield advantage.

"This provides cover while Tierney bombs the left flank, but with Chambers we keep midfield coverage.

"We then try to start our attacks with intelligent distribution from the back as a three-at-the-back.

"We also often leave room for our right-back to cut into the half spaces with a dribble to break presses, Bellerin doing it quite well a number of times.

"Arteta seems like he wants to use the right-winger for width and have the right-back cut underneath. It's obvious we're not looking for a 343 wingback that sprints up and down the line.

"White is quite nicely suited to play this role as he's a mix of Chamber's hybrid centre-back with the ability to make the breaks and start runs like Bellerin has, while seemingly looking like an upgrade in all aspects."
