Explained: story of how Arteta inspired Morocco coach Walid Regargui before World Cup success

Morocco head coach Walid Regregui is widely being hailed as the best manager of the World Cup after guiding his side to the semi-finals.

He managed to guide them past tough teams like Belgium, Spain and Portugal to become the first African side to get to the World Cup semis.

An interesting throwback has emerged which indicates that Mikel Arteta might’ve been one of the coaching inspirations for Regragui.

A few years ago, the Arsenal boss held a coaching seminar which analyzed the Gunners’ win over Man City in the 2020 FA Cup semi-final.

A picture from that seminar, held on zoom, shows Regragui among the attendees who came to learn some tricks from Arteta.

The Morocco manager has definitely learned well, with his side having the best defensive record at the World Cup – only conceding one goal in five games.

Arteta, however, refuses to take any credit for Regragui’s success, as he said upon being asked about this matter: “The impact on him he deserves it and what he is doing is totally amazing, what the team is transmitting is great.

"I think it’s a really positive thing for world football to have an African team at this stage where there are four very selective teams at this World Cup.”

Morocco face France in the World Cup semi-finals on Wednesday and are one win away from becoming the first African team to reach the final.
