Why did Mikel Arteta travel to Spain for Real Madrid-Atletico Madrid U18s derby? Answered

Mikel Arteta was a surprising attendant in the recent derby match between Real Madrid U18s and Atletico Madrid U18s on Sunday (March 17).

With Arsenal having no matches at the weekend and the international break coming up, Arteta opted to travel back to his country to watch the match live.

As per Spanish outlet Relevo, the Spanish gaffer attended the game so that he could meet up with his close friend Alvaro Arbeloa – who is the head coach of Real Madrid’s U18 side.

While there is no update on what they talked about, the two apparently ‘exchanged ideas’ about coaching. With that being said, Arteta could’ve also done some discreet scouting on the players which featured in the derby and potentially identified possible future targets.

Arteta is not at all interested in taking up the Real Madrid job and this was only a bit of a leisurely personal trip to keep himself active.

The Spaniard is currently focused on helping Arsenal finish the season strongly and win the Premier League as well as Champions League titles.
